Re: “Eugenics by another name” Feb 15 Excalibur

"An article written in the Feb. 15, Abilities supplement of Excalibur stated that between 80-90% (although some studies have put the rate at 97%) of unborn children who have tested positive for Down’s Syndrome are aborted. I agree with the author that aborting the unborn because of a disability is wrong, but doesn’t this contradict the logic of the pro-choice position? Many people who support the right to abortion argue that it’s not anyone else’s business what women do with their own bodies. But if we say that one type of abortion is wrong, that’s making it our business. If we are to make a judgment, saying one type of abortion is wrong then why is another type okay? Aren’t these reasons arbitrary? Why is aborting a human fetus because of a disability or gender wrong, yet abortion for any reason or no reason at all, is okay? It’s clear that the question should not be, when is abortion wrong, but why is it ever right? And that question hinges on the nature of the unborn. If they are human beings, then when is it acceptable to kill an innocent human being? If they are not human, then why are some abortions be wrong?

On March 20, a pro-life club at York is hosting an event called “The Abortion Debate”. It will be a formal debate between a pro-life and a pro-choice speaker, with each side being given equal time to represent their views. I encourage you all to come out, and hear BOTH sides of the issue. More information can be found at ypyatyork.ncln.ca. I hope to see you all there."
